Neer Nirmal Pariyojna
The Neer Nirmal Pariyojna, undertaken by the Tharu Janjati Mahila Vikas Samiti in collaboration with the State Drinking Water and Sanitation Mission of Uttar Pradesh, brought about a significant transformation in Gonda district from 2014 to 2017.

This programme aimed to address critical issues related to water supply, sanitation, and community empowerment, focusing on activities that contributed to the overall well-being of the region.
One of the primary tasks of the Neer Nirmal Pariyojna was the testing of receiving water and its quality. Ensuring safe and clean water for the community was a fundamental step. The programme also worked towards the development and enrichment of water sources, ensuring a sustainable supply of clean water.
The construction of infrastructure for water supply, including source sustainability and domestic tap connections, was a significant achievement. This initiative sought to bring functional tap connections to households, ensuring easy access to clean water.
Grey-water management was another crucial aspect of the programme, running parallel to the other construction works. Proper management of greywater helps in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene within the community.
To ensure the quality and sustainability of the work, third-party inspections were arranged, and billing of work in progress was meticulously maintained. The creation and maintenance of registers for geo-tagging assets added a layer of accountability and transparency to the project.
Installing water measuring equipment such as meters or sensors and integrating them into the operation and maintenance (O&M) cost, allowed for the accurate measurement and collection of water charges. Launching the scheme effectively ensured the long-term viability of the water supply infrastructure.
The programme extended its efforts into continuous water supply, operation, and maintenance. It also included water fee collection and interaction with better-performing Gram Panchayats and Village Water Security Committees to share knowledge and best practices.
Community involvement and awareness were crucial in this initiative. The Neer Nirmal Pariyojna organized various programmes and meetings, such as Mahila Meetings, Joint Meetings, PRA, Village Action Plans, Prabhat Feri, Open Meetings, and Gram Sabha Meetings, to engage with Gram Panchayat members and the community. The Neer Nirmal Pariyojna served as a holistic and community-driven approach to tackle water and sanitation issues in Gonda district. By addressing water quality, infrastructure, greywater management, and community empowerment, this programme made a lasting impact on the lives of the people, ensuring sustainable access to clean water and improved sanitation practices.
